After years of art school, a move to Italy in 1991, with extensive travel in Europe, unlocked the door to a strong sense of freedom with the medium of photography. This was the beginning of years of experimentation with ways of painting and toning black and white photographs, and exploring the relationship between painting & photography, and black & white imagery to colored imagery. Painting on photographs is both a meditation on an image and a re-interpretation of that which was recorded initially. The "original" photographic image is a springboard, a point of departure... Photographs in this series are unique silver gelatin fiber prints, painted or sprayed with sepia or copper toners, and painted with liquid watercolors.
